Research & Work

Research, standards, systems and tools spanning 6G, intelligent networks, quantum communications, distributed systems and professional service.

*research-work*major-mode: portfolio

My professional work spans communication-system research, standards, invention and working software. This page is the durable index into that work: projects, publications, standards activity, earlier systems, professional service, talks and demonstrations link directly to the relevant project, paper, article, recording or archive wherever a public source is available.

Current focus

6G & standards

RAN and system architecture, ISAC, terrestrial/non-terrestrial integration, mobility, QoS and the evolution from 5G-Advanced toward 6G. Recent notes include 3GPP RAN3 #131bis — 6G RAN architecture and NR ISAC and 3GPP RAN2 #133bis — 6G control plane and mobility.

Intelligent systems

AI-native networking, agentic systems, distributed intelligence and application-network collaboration, including the sustainability implications of AI in 6G discussed in my Springer chapter on AI, sustainability and 6G.

Quantum communications

QKD, quantum networking, key-management integration and standards. I co-author the active IRTF/QIRG Internet-Draft A Multiplane Architecture Proposal for the Quantum Internet, maintain the QuantumComm Workbench, and write about quantum-technology standardisation.

Interactive & distributed systems

XR, edge/cloud systems, distributed applications and human-centric interfaces. See the 6G-XR Impact Day report and the NetXRate/XR work.

Projects

Selected research programmes and systems I have contributed to, linked to the project, software or contemporary coverage.

  • QuantumComm Workbench — interactive tooling for QKD engineering, protocols, KMS/API integration and quantum-network scenarios.
  • EV Planner — map-first EV journey planning with charging, amenities, dog-friendly stops and local AI search.
  • 6G-XR — Horizon Europe 6G eXperimental Research infrastructure for next-generation XR services, 1 Jan 2023–31 Dec 2025. Innovation Manager, grant-proposal co-author and Project Manager for InterDigital. See the 6G-XR Impact Day report and InterDigital consortium profile.
  • FLAME — Horizon 2020 research on advanced 5G/mobile networking and media-service infrastructure. Contributor.
  • iCIRRUS — EU-funded intelligent Converged network consolidating Radio and optical access aRound USer equipment; approximately €4M programme, 1 Jan 2015–31 Dec 2017. Grant-proposal co-author, Research Associate and Project Manager for the Network Convergence Laboratory at the University of Essex. See RCR Wireless coverage and the EuCNC poster listing.
  • NIRVANA — UK EPSRC-funded Intelligent, Heterogeneous Virtualised Networking Infrastructure; approximately €1M programme, Oct 2014–30 Sep 2017. Research Associate.
  • CLIMBER — EU FP7 Cross-Layer Investigation and Integration of Computing and Networking Aspects of Mobile Social Networks. Research Associate.
  • MONICA — EU FP7 Mobile Cloud Computing: Networks, Services and Architecture. Research Associate.

Publications

My complete publication and citation record is maintained on Google Scholar. Selected book contributions are highlighted here.

Cover of Digital Sustainability: Legislations, Standards, Solutions and Related Case Studies

Springer · 2026

Edited by Christophe Gaie and Markus Mueck. I contributed two chapters connecting sustainability, AI and sixth-generation communication systems:

Patents

I have a sustained invention portfolio across communication systems and related technologies, spanning 220+ patent families, including pending applications. I was recognised as Inventor of the Year in 2021.

Standards & industry work

I contribute to standards and pre-standard research across 3GPP and the IRTF/IETF ecosystem, alongside system architecture, prototyping and industry demonstrations.

A Multiplane Architecture Proposal for the Quantum Internet

An active Quantum Internet Research Group (QIRG) Internet-Draft in the IRTF stream, co-authored with Diego Lopez, Vicente Martin, Blanca Lopez and Luis M. Contreras. It proposes a reference architecture for integrating Quantum Internet technologies with current Internet operations and management. As an Internet-Draft, it is work in progress rather than a final IETF standard.

Earlier systems & infrastructure

My earlier work grew out of mobile computing, distributed computing and virtualisation, spanning mobile-cloud testbeds, cloud federation, C-RAN/mobile-edge integration, device virtualisation, networking infrastructure and software prototypes. The records below preserve the systems and artefacts that appeared on my earlier website.

Mobile cloud, C-RAN & edge-computing research

The earlier portfolio described this as a state-of-the-art mobile-cloud research and teaching testbed that I developed and managed at the University of Essex.

During my PhD I developed and managed a mobile-cloud research and teaching testbed at the University of Essex. The work connected mobile-cloud computing, OpenStack/KVM, cloudlets and clones, C-RAN and software radio, and became the basis for my thesis and a sequence of publications.

Teaching & research infrastructure

  • CE805 — Cloud Technologies and Systems — teaching, laboratory work and course-material design.
  • CE222 — Operating Systems — Graduate Lab Assistant, 2013–2015.
  • CE151 — Introduction to Programming — Graduate Lab Assistant, 2014.
  • CE153 — Introduction to Database — Graduate Lab Assistant, 2014.
  • CE101 — Professional Development — Graduate Lab Assistant, 2014.
  • CE235 — Computer Security — Graduate Lab Assistant, 2013.
  • Network Convergence Laboratory — University of Essex laboratory/research infrastructure associated with the earlier mobile-cloud and networking work.

Professional service

I have served as a journal editor, track/publicity chair and programme/technical committee member across telecommunications, networking, cloud computing, AI and emerging technologies. The Professional Activities page keeps the complete chronological record; these are current and representative highlights.
