I’m Chathura Sarathchandra. I like working on problems that sit between disciplines, especially where communication systems meet computing, intelligence and new forms of interaction.

My professional life moves between research, system architecture, prototyping, standards and invention. I also keep room for interests that have nothing to prove: field science, building things, games, books and ideas that may or may not become projects.

Background

I studied Computer Science at the University of Essex, graduating with First-Class Honours, and later completed a PhD in the School of Computer Science and Electronic Engineering. Since then I have worked across academic, collaborative research and industrial R&D environments.

I am currently a Senior Researcher and Senior Research Manager at InterDigital Research and Innovation Labs, working across 5G, 6G and next-generation wireless systems, including the integration of AI/ML, XR and quantum technologies. I am a Senior Member of IEEE, and my work has been recognised with honours including Inventor of the Year and and appointments as an Honorary Visiting Fellow at the University of Essex in 2017, 2018 and 2019.

What drives the work

I am drawn to research questions that span established disciplinary boundaries. I place equal value on developing theory and building working systems because experimental prototypes expose hidden assumptions, implementation constraints, and failure modes that abstract analysis can overlook, while theory provides the general principles and explanatory structure needed to distinguish fundamental limitations from artefacts of a particular implementation.

Beyond research

The Sandbox is where I keep curiosity-led work: mycology, Minecraft engineering, speculative ideas and other interests that are worth exploring without forcing them into a research programme.
